This Black Rose Garden Memorial Mural was curated by Curtis Wallace, as well as, one of student in Washtenaw County’s youth programs called Educate Youth 501c3 in Ypsilanti , Michigan. Washtenaw My Brother’s Keeper created a “call to artist” to students in the Washtenaw County Area for a STOP GUN VIOLENCE initiative. WMBK, along with their partner ship with the Community Violence Intervention Team, The Be Creative Studio, and Corner Health Center chose one of the most extraordinary students they could find.
Meet the artists
Deshawn Chambers– ARtist Mentee
is a 18 year old student at Ypsilanti Community School and a 5 year attending mentee at Educate youth 501c3. He musician, poet, brother, mentor, and now a civil right artivist. He works hard to make good discuss His art submission to the call-to-artist was chosen as the over all finalist to put his image up as mural.

Whose names are on the mural?
The names that surround the Black Rose are people whose lives have been taken due to gun violence in Washtenaw County during the years of 2008 to 2023. These names are only of lost ones whose family members have given us permission to place there names there in order to help our community grieve and remember those that are no longer with us in the community.

We are teaching him in real time about money management, financial literacy, and generational wealth. All this while giving him a fighting chance to live in this world where he we see young men of color are not valued as the beautiful and brilliant human beings we are.
